Clean and Safe Streets

Our residents, visitors, and small business owners deserve clean and safe streets regardless of what neighborhood they live in. I’m committed to ensuring our neighborhoods get clean and stay clean.

The recent explosion of illegal dumping in East and West Oakland is completely unacceptable and threatens residents’ public health. I am committed to ensuring everyone lives in a beautiful neighborhood with safe, clean public spaces and streets by working towards putting an end to illegal dumping in our city. That’s why we’ve aggressively increased fines for illegal dumping, added another pick up crew and added more trucks and specialized equipment to remove trash from dump sites.

We’re also working to prevent dumping in the first place by restoring litter enforcement officers and holding Bulky Block Parties — that’s FREE dumping for your bulky items in Oakland on the last Saturday of every month at our Public Works Corp Yard on Edgewater Drive.

Together, we:

  • Filled a record 20,000 potholes in 2017 and launched Oakland’s first “Summer of Paving” in 2018 to pave 25 miles of our worst local roads – double our past average!
  • Added several new illegal dumping crews and environmental enforcement officers to track down and prosecute dumpers and pick up dumping faster, with proactive services in hot spots.

Held Oakland’s inaugural Bulky Block Parties, where residents were able to dispose of large items for free. The series has successfully promoted Oakland’s Bulky Pickup service, which all residents are entitled to use for no-extra-charge disposal of large items they can place at their own curb by appointment. Also launched with Supervisor Miley and Men of Valor Oakland’s first Adopt-a-Hot-Spot program.
